Little Type Mail Order / Lookout! Store Off-Line

We are sad to inform you that our partners in mail order crime, Little Type Mail Order, have officially shut down. We are working on a new store layout and will be back up and running in the coming months, but until then, feel free to read the statement that is up on their page:

"As many of you know, our founder, Erika Hynes, passed away last April. We have tried our best to keep Little Type operating since that time, but it has become apparent that without her direction and inspiration, it's just not possible to maintain the level of service and quality that would do justice to Erika's memory.

What does this mean for you, our valued customers and suppliers? In the first place, Little Type is no longer accepting new orders. If you have already made an order, it will be filled, provided the item is in stock. If the item is no longer available, your money will be refunded.

If you have placed items for sale with Little Type, we will soon begin the process of returning any unsold items to you and paying any remaining balance that it is due to you. We ask for your patience; Erika's illness made it impossible for her to do her normally impeccable job of record-keeping, and as a result, we have a lot of confusing information to sort through.

Therefore, it would be helpful if you'd send us a letter or email stating exactly what you sent us, what the cost was, and how much, if anything, you've been paid. In most cases we already have the information on file, but we don't want to miss anybody. If you're not completely sure exactly what you sent or what you're owed, don't worry; chances are we can figure it out or at least work out a reasonable compromise.

Most importantly, we'd like to thank all of you for your support of Little Type over the years. It's been a lot of fun, and we'd like to think we've played some small part in keeping the spirit of underground music and writing alive. We wish that it didn't have to end this way, but as we've all learned this past year, sometimes, despite our most heartfelt wishes and intentions, life has other plans in mind.

Gimme Something Better Book Release Events!

Gimme Something Better is a brand new book by Jack Boulware and Silke Tudor which collects the oral history of the Bay Area punk scene. Exploring stories from North Beach's Mabuhay Gardens to Berkeley's 924 Gilman Street, Gimme Something Better include passages on Lookout's beginnings and the scene that gave birth to some most seminal punk bands in the genre.

In celebration, there will be book release events held across the Bay Area this week. The first event will be held on Monday, October 12th at Broadway Studios (formerly the On Broadway), in cooperation with Litquake 10. Journey to the End of the Bay: Punk Rockers Spill Their Guts, will feature a panel of Bay Area legends telling stories about the good ol' days. Storytellers include Lynn Breedlove ( Tribe 8 ), Anna Joy Springer (Sister Spit, Cypher in the Snow), Bucky Sinister (Gilman spoken-word), Oran Canfield (the Farm), Rozz Rezabek (Negative Trend), Jesse Luscious (Blatz, the Gr’ups), John Geek (Fleshies, Triclops!), Chicken John (Circus Redickuless), Kareim McKnight (Barrington/Cloyne), Johnny Strike (Crime), and Hank Rank (Crime). Live music by the Avengers’ Penelope Houston and her band.

On Tuesday, October 13th, Dr. Frank Portman will join Boulware and Tudor for a talk and book signing at The Booksmith Bookstore on Haight St. in San Francisco.

Finally, Saturday October 17th, the Gimme Something Better train crosses the Bay and pulls into 924 Gilman St. for a night of music featuring Schlong, Social Unrest, Classics Of Love (feat. Jesse Michaels), Druglords Of The Avenues (Members of Swinging Utters), Dr. Frank(MTX), and Fugitive Kind (Members of Absolutely Zippo).
